Dry Needling
Dry needling is an effective clinical technique used to relieve pain and restore normal muscle function. It involves inserting fine, single-use sterile needles into myofascial trigger points (tight knots within a muscle) to stimulate a local twitch response, helping the muscle release and relax.
At Physio HQ, dry needling is performed by our senior physios, Jordan and Wayne, who have completed specialised training in dry needling techniques. We use it as a complementary tool alongside hands-on joint therapy, massage, and active exercise rehabilitation to speed up your overall recovery.
Dry Needling vs Acupuncture
While both techniques use similar ultra-fine needles, their clinical approach is different. Dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles, targeting specific muscle dysfunction and trigger points. Acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine and focuses on balancing energy pathways across the body.
Included in Your Consultation
We believe in using every effective tool available to help you recover. If dry needling is recommended for your condition, it is included as part of your standard physiotherapy appointment with Jordan or Wayne at no extra cost.

Suitable for patients dealing with stubborn muscle tightness, joint stiffness, or persistent trigger point pain. Dry needling is always optional and is only used after a clinical assessment and your full consent.
Key Benefits & Conditions Treated:
Persistent Muscle Tightness: Releasing deep muscular knots in the upper back, calves, glutes, or hamstrings.
Tension-Related Pain: Relieving postural tightness around the neck, shoulders, and lower back.
Cervicogenic Headaches: Relaxing tight neck and suboccipital muscles that trigger tension headaches.
Overuse & Tendon Strain: Reducing muscle guarding around overloaded tendons, such as tennis elbow or Achilles tightness.
Chronic Muscular Pain: Assisting with long-standing muscular discomfort and restricted joint mobility.
What to Expect at Physio HQ
Assessment & Consent: Your physio will assess whether dry needling is suitable for your injury. They will explain the process clearly beforehand and obtain your consent before proceeding.
Gentle Treatment: Fine needles are carefully placed into targeted trigger points. You may feel a slight prick or a brief muscle twitch as the knot releases, followed by a sensation of muscle relaxation.
Comfort Control: Treatment is always tailored to your comfort level. If you feel nervous or uncomfortable at any point, your physio can adjust or stop immediately.
Combined Rehabilitation: Following needling, your physio will often guide you through gentle stretches or mobility exercises to lock in the improved movement range.
